“Find her, now. I don’t care what she’s doing or what games she’s playing; this is the embassy ball and she must be there” the butler said his face turning more and more red by the second
“yessir” he said, mock saluting him as he jogged off. What an idiot he thought to himself. There was no way it was better for her to be there if she was in one of her moods, it was better to say she was ill in bed or something god, he was stubborn.
“Alice?” he called as he reached the stairs leading up to the tallest tower of the castle. Actually it was probably better not to alert her to his presence. He pushed open the heavy wooden door and ran up the twisted stairs of the turret, taking two steps at a time. When he reached the top he pushed open the door leading onto the roof and paused for a minute to let the wind blow across his face.
Stepping carefully he walked to the other side and saw her, sitting hunched against the other side of the turret. She’d been coming up here for years and yet only he always knew where to find her.
He sat down next to her before passing her his dinner jacket as she shivered. She took it gratefully and glanced at him with a sad smile.
“They’re expecting you” he said gently nudging her side.
She closed her eyes and paused, before getting up quickly to her feet. He got up to and then took in her full length view. The dress she was wearing would have been perfectly acceptable for a 17 year old princess at her father’s banquet had she not been wearing a pair of beat-up converse and no tights. Her hair was out but windswept so it looked messier than it should have done.
“I’ll get Madeline” he said quickly going towards the turret to descend the stairs and allow her to follow at her own pace.
Once he reached her chamber he called out and Madeline was by his side in an instant already armed with nude tights and an appropriate pair of heels.
“Roof again?” she asked knowingly and Alexander looked at her, not at all surprised that she knew. Madeine, despite being Alice’s maid, was possibly the most intuitive person in the entire castle, she knew everything about everyone, without being told.
Alexander nodded and respectfully stepped out of the room to wait as Alice arrived.
Five minutes later she emerged wearing the same dress (which Madeline had somehow smartened up), the non-ripped tights and a pair of heels that made her legs seem as if they went on forever. Her hair was now up but pinned with little diamond clips, and her tiara was in place, to make it look as if it was meant to be messy.
“Alex?” Alice asked looking down at herself, unsure of her appearance.
“You’ll be the most beautiful woman in the room, as usual” he said with a smile as she took his arm and he led her down the stairs.
“Ready?” he asked as they reached the grand double doors to the ballroom. They paused at the entrance and all eyes turned on them. Gasps and sighs filled the room as those present took in the view. Alexander’s tall and muscular frame, paired with his dark messy hair and piercing green eyes complemented Alice’s petite, rather skinny appearance, her light blue/grey eyes and her light brown hair. Okay, so they weren’t a couple, yet. But they did look like the most perfect couple ever, and their souls were matched just as equally, she just didn’t know it yet, and he was hoping she’d realise it soon.
